Through the Looking Glass: Precursor.

Before I even get into the bible, I know that it’s important to understand a few concepts first.

Hermaneutics – This refers to the science of interpreting holy texts. I am by no means claiming to be a scholar, but I’m just as human as anyone else and no one is really doing any better than the best they can. I’ve decided to do this as an examination of the religion itself, my past, and even though more often than not I will explain why something is wrong, I may even agree with the words I read. But I will try my best to utilize this. I understand there are multiple ways of interpreting the bible, and I will try to touch upon different perspectives as they relate to my own through this whole… thing I’m attempting to do.

I have also heard, time and time again, to study context – but I’ll say right now, the favorable context intepretations are not necessarily right because many people have opinions that it is is. I will examine context from more than just one aspect, I won’t stop short where Christian apologetics often do.

I’m open to any tips from people of any religious stance as to ideas to keep in mind, but I’ll also have the internet at my disposal, as well as my college’s entire library database online, and plain old experience. I know I’ve heard people with different opinions of which books to read first, so I’m happy to hear anyone’s opinions.

Anyone who wants to interject is welcome to, but I want to heavily emphasize this will only be a personal reflection on the bible. I don’t know everything, nor would I claim to.

Given that no one gives me any suggestions, I’m starting at Genesis and going through in order, and I have Thanksgiving break for the rest of this week so there’s a good chance I’ll have my first post up for this series by this weekend.

Looking forward to your insights, been a while since I read it myself unfortunately my reading list at the moment is massive… If I can add any suggestions or insights I’ll be happy to.

I never knew there was a direct name for that type of study. Is that what you’re studying in school now? I’m really looking forward to these posts!
